Sinai, typically understood as the triangular peninsular of Egypt, can refer to an area that extends over the Red Sea into Saudi Arabia. It is this whole area — stretching from the easterly coast of the Egyptian Sinai region all the way up to Eilat in Israel and Aqaba in Jordan, down to the west coast of Saudi Arabia — that an Egyptian couple have been praying over. They have been called to prepare the land for the great harvest that is to come, all the way around the Red Sea.

She and her husband, Emad* were challenged by another Egyptian brother to establish a house of prayer in the southern Sinai area on the shores of the Red Sea. Initially Emad and Amal had other ideas, intending to go to Turkey and later to South Africa, but when they dedicated time in prayer and fasting asking God for direction, He guided them back to the prayer house in such a wonderful way they haven’t looked back since.

In the Old Testament the term Sinai meant the area from the easterly peninsula in Egypt, up to Aqaba and over to Saudi Arabia, Amal explained. Historically, the tribe of Midian lived on both sides of the Red Sea, and there are other nomadic tribes who had roots in Saudi Arabia going back and forth over the sea as well, such as the Mezeina tribe. They are one family, living on two sides of the sea.

The Dedanites and others in the region have long lived on both sides of the Red Sea which at some points is only 26 km (16 miles) wide. Teman or Yemen, Saudi Arabia, and the Sinai peninsula are all deeply connected.

Moreover, Amal contends, the Bible foresees a time when Jewish people will one day need to lodge and hide as fugitives in these very locations. They, and others, are preparing for that time.

Amal pointed to a passage in Isaiah 21:

 The oracle concerning Arabia.
In the thickets in Arabia you will lodge,
    O caravans of Dedanites.

To the thirsty bring water;
    meet the fugitive with bread,
    O inhabitants of the land of Tema.

For they have fled from the swords,
    from the drawn sword,
from the bent bow,
    and from the press of battle.

(Isaiah 21:13-15)

Emad and Amal felt God’s leading to establish a long term kingdom community, living there in the prayer house. Both of them had many years of experience in ministry, which served them well setting up something in such a spiritually barren environment.

A sister from the West had been ministering to locals from that same house, and had a strong call to the area before Emad and Amal were led back to live and serve there more long term. Today there are 10 other people serving in the area who are connected with the prayer house, enough to be considered a community of righteous people according to Abraham’s calculations in Genesis 18.

The town has a small population of just 30,000 people, mostly Bedouins along with other Egyptians and around 7,000 foreigners, many of whom are into New Age mysticism. It is also known as a place where there are a lot of mental health issues, and a lot of healing is needed.

There is no church apart from one coptic church outside the town in the mountains. The town is generally quite hostile to Christianity and Jesus, but over the last few years of dedicated worship and intercession, Emad and Amal have witnessed a shift in the spiritual atmosphere and less resistance to kingdom activities.

Today there is ministry among the locals, in preschools, and to the large community of foreigners who live there.

“Once we started praying for something to start happening, God sends workers to do the thing we prayed about!” Amal said. Prayer breaks through and opens up the way for God’s work.

“Now it’s open — it wasn’t before. No one wanted to come or they would suddenly cancel due to the resistance in the land. Now it’s opened the way.”

The area surrounding the prayer house needs a lot of healing — both spiritual and mental healing. It is a small unusual place, not on any trade routes or in the news, but in God’s eyes it is extremely significant.

She also talked about the fact that it is on the border of Egypt, as it is on the coast, a concept mentioned in Isaiah 19, with a pillar being a testimony for God:

“In that day there will be an altar to the Lord in the midst of the land of Egypt, and a pillar to the Lord at its border. It will be a sign and a witness to the Lord of hosts in the land of Egypt. When they cry to the Lord because of oppressors, he will send them a savior and defender, and deliver them. And the Lord will make himself known to the Egyptians, and the Egyptians will know the Lord in that day and worship with sacrifice and offering, and they will make vows to the Lord and perform them.” (Isaiah 19:19-21)

“The prayer house is a house of prayer for all nations — people come from all over the world, representing nations there in the city and the area. The house of prayer is the womb and it comes to the land.

They feel God’s call to prepare the way, to prepare the land for God’s kingdom to come as it says in Isaiah 62. They see part of their work as moving rocks — removing the major resistance that is currently obstructing the path. They do this through worship and intercession, inviting the Lord to come.

“Go through, go through the gates;
    prepare the way for the people;
build up, build up the highway;
    clear it of stones;
    lift up a signal over the peoples.”
(Isaiah 62:10)

“God is in a hurry to have an altar in the land because he doesn’t want to punish — He doesn’t want to come with judgement but with mercy,” said Amal. “We need an altar of prayer and intercession to bring his mercy.” (James 2:13)

Here are some prayer points from the prayer house we can bring before the Lord:
