After enduring arrests, beatings, and multiple miraculous escapes, the life of “Boulos” (not his real name) sounds like it came straight out of the book of Acts. But like Paul, Boulos had received such a powerful vision and encounter with the Lord that he could not stop preaching the Gospel, no matter what the cost.
He has lived a life of sacrifice and seen great fruit, but as a partner with Derech Avraham, he has asked for help for the first time — in relation to his daughter — and we want to present the request before you.
Boulos was born a Palestinian Muslim from the Bethlehem area. He used to be very against Christianity, but some believers shared the gospel with him and after studying, gradually became convinced it was true, and got baptized.
However, it was only when Yeshua appeared to him personally on the night after his baptism almost twenty years ago that the dramatic changes began.
Jesus asked him to give up his construction business and start sharing the gospel full time. It wasn’t long before he saw 18 Muslims receive the Lord, and was coming dangerously close to starting a church. He soon learned his name was being mentioned in the mosque each week, with the Muslim clerics warning people not to talk to him.
After that he experienced a long and painful period of persecution. First of all his brothers forced him to choose between them and Jesus. He chose Jesus.
Then he was beaten, arrested, tied up and interrogated on several occasions. Twice he managed to miraculously escape from danger, but after two years of trying to maintain connection with his own family, his wife and three young children, obey Jesus and stay alive, he was forced to escape over the border and take refuge in Jerusalem.
At first life was hard and lonely, but God opened many doors for him there too, enabling him to share with Kurds, Iraqis, and other Arabic speakers who had come to Israel for hospital treatment. He soon led 10 Kurds to the Lord and the wife of a very religious Muslim cleric from Iraq. To everyone’s astonishment, her husband had a dream of Jesus on the same day that she was baptised, making the prospect of returning home considerably less daunting.
Since then he has started taking tour groups around Christian sites as a way of sharing the gospel which has proved hugely successful.
So Boulos has lived like this now for around 15 years in Jerusalem, only able to see his wife occasionally, and his children hardly at all. He has three grandchildren that he has never met. Obviously the situation is painful, but it is a price he is willing to pay.
He lives by faith, not asking for help but trusting in the Lord for provision, but now a need has arisen and for the first time we want to bring it before you.
His daughter, just 8 years old when he left, went to a Christian school is now an accomplished student pursuing a degree in International Law. “She also wants to help people,” Boulos said, proudly. She is in her last year of studies, but Boulos is unable to find the last $4000 for her to complete her degree which must be paid by the end of the month.
